DUCK1&2 The Cool Chair but with less holes 2008 - 2010
The Duck chair started life as a concept for a rotationally moulded outdoor chair, the project name was chosen partly to create an association with water and the idea of sitting around a pool or lake. Some misled fools think the chairs name comes from the designs inspiration, that of a ducks bill.
Davidson planned to build his own test rotational mould from 3mm plate steel partly as a challenge but also as an experiment to see how technical limitations would shape a design. Since compound forms are almost impossible to produce reasonably well in the average workshop the design was kept to flat and rolled surfaces.
During the 3D computer modeling stage Davidson accidentally rendered a design in a speaker mesh like material, the resulting image was enough switch the focus away from a rotational moulded chair and to a hand made one off instead. see Cool Chair
The two main images here are of the second full size prototype (Duck two) made originally as a buck to form the punched metal panels for the Cool Chair. It was finished off and painted to look like plastic for the Milan furniture fair 2010. Davidson is currently seeking a manufacturer for the design.
